About Us

What is EPIC?

EPIC Global Challenge, a project from the Stanford Persuasive Technology and Peace Innovation Labs, creates frameworks, technology, tools and incentive prizes to empower individuals to create innovation networks to solve complex global problems.

Who are We?

We are a global community of designers, researchers, practitioners, scientists, engineers, businesspeople, activists, government officials, and other stakeholders.  We’re working together to measurably increasing the quantity & quality of positive engagement across conflict boundaries worldwide. You can learn more about who we are, what we do, and how you can join us, here: Participants

That sounds great, but what is the long-term vision?

The goals of EPIC Challenge are three-fold:

  1. EPIC’s primary purpose is to foster discussion and innovation in order to measurably reduce conflicts around the world. We are building an Internet-based, collaborative platform where anyone, anywhere, can work on mutually beneficial solutions to racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, religious, and political violence worldwide–together. Through this open-science forum, we look to empower communities and individuals worldwide to design :
    • lasting solutions to persistent conflicts, as well as
    • solid data & evidence on what works well and what doesn’t.
    • It also allows members to network and collaborate with unexpected participants, and lend their own expertise to solving some of the most pressing social problems of our time.
  2. Likewise, we look to engage corporations and members of the business community in the peace process. Experience demonstrates that peaceful communities not only yield higher quality of life for their citizens, but present much greater stability and economic opportunity for businesses and entrepreneurs operating in the region. A 2004 World Health Organization report, The Economic Dimensions of Interpersonal Violence found the annual cost of violence in the USA amounts to 3.3% of annual GDP. Given this vast opportunity cost, both businesses and the citizens that operate them have strong financial, personal, and quality-of-life vested interests in measurably increasing peace in their communities. EPIC directly incentivizes these potential Peace Innovators to design and launch businesses that deliver peace, as a service, for profit.  EPIC does this in a rigorous, data-driven, empirical way, so these solutions can quickly be scaled globally.
  3. Finally, EPIC aims to create an online library for peace project anecdotes, literature on violence reduction, and personal sites for peace innovators around the globe: Imagine an online, peace-oriented water cooler around which interested parties can connect and engage with one another.
